So there was a live music event going on a few blocks from my place (hoo-ray I don't have to park!). Chris, Thrasher and I decided to grab some dinner and check it out. We ate at the Rockford (excellent Tilapia wraps) and Chris mentioned that MC Chris was playing next week at the Cradle. I said, yes, definitely, we should go. Then after a moment's thought, I said, "Do you realize the last time we saw MC Chris I was dating Logan and we saw the show with him? Man, that was a long time ago. I wonder what that guy's up to now." For those of you playing along at home, this is also he guy that left Capital Promotions high and dry and tried to steal their customers, and the reason why I've been working part-time for the last several months (good for me, bad for the boss Jeff). And this is literally the first time I've talked about him in months. NOT FIVE MINUTES LATER he walks in the door, like I've accidentally summoned him from the earth or something, and I just sit there thinking, what. the. fuck. Soon enough he sees us and comes over and throws hugs on Chris and me. I kind of shrug away from the hug and respond with a kind of "guhh" sound. Then he looks at me, says, "Do you even want to get into it?" and I respond, "Not really, no," and he goes "Alright then," and I say, cheerfully, "Yeah, goodnight!" and he walks away and sits with his friends, three feet away. It was absolutely bizarre. Chris gave me crap for not letting him have it, but...to what end? He's fully aware he's a crap weasel. I'm not going to change it by calling him out as such. So the night goes on, we catch an AWESOME live show outside of the Hibernian, a Battle of the Bands where one band begins a song and another band ends it, playing at opposite sides of a big tented space. Very cool. I would love to play with The Love Language someday. Logan and his friends are there, and he faithfully avoids my eye contact. No further confrontation. We head out to Dive Bar, meet up with Lil Thrasher and catch up with Steven Tomany and his poor bruised ribs. I head to the bathroom, and on my way back, I have the following exchange with a charming gentleman dressed like he's about to rob Kevin McCallister's house. Marv: "Hey, I like your hat."
Me: "Thanks."
Marv: "Who are you here with?"
Me, pointing: "My friends."
Marv: "Yeah, one of em your boyfriend? Girlfriend?"
Me: "Um, yeah, I live with one of them."
Marv: "Boy or girl?"
Me: "Boy"
Marv: "You ever touch it?"
Me, matter of factly: "That's a very inappropriate thing to say."
Marv: "Not where I'm from."
Me: "Where is that?"
Marv: "Brazil."
Me, in the friendliest tone: "Well, guess where you're not right now?"
Marv, grinning: "Brazil..."
Me: "Right. Goodbye."
...This whole time, his two friends sitting with him are banging the table, laughing uncontrollably. BURN. Seriously, did someone cast a douche nozzle spell on me? I WAS SURROUNDED.
In other news, one of the funniest pictures I have ever seen in my life was taken of Chris looking at Lil Thrasher's boobs. And we ran into (and got pictures with) a dude who looked EXACTLY like Rainn Wilson from "Rockstar." WIN. Current Mood: amused |

really, miracle whip, think about toning it down.
played a show in charlotte where the soundguy was this road-hardened british guy named Blue. my Dad came out to the show with a woman he may or may not be dating. she seemed very nice and i guess i'm too old to go through that "you ain't my mother!" kind of fit, but geez, it was weird. he claimed she was just a friend and not a lady-friend but...who knows. i just want him to be happy. played a wedding in a durham museum. sound ricocheted like you would not believe--we had to play what could best be described as an acoustic version of Don't Stop Believing and basically back a foot away from all of our mics so the sound wasn't overwhelming. security was ridiculous--had to wear badges and everything. at the end of the night, one of the guards, this chunky close-cropped lady, was standing by the door as the wedding guests filed back in after sending off the couple. instead of telling everyone calmly that the museum would be closing, she just stood there with her arms up in a V shouting, "Goodnight! Goodnight!!" ...i couldn't stop laughing. it was like Patton Oswalt had wandered in and was yelling the punchline of a joke. also one of the good-looking photographers turned out to be Brian of Defending Brooklyn (guess which NY borough he currently and ironically lives in? just guess) a band that played the 828 house, and was one of the dudes that moved into the house after Chris, Joseph and Sock moved out. i asked if he could see anything in the woods behind the house and he was like, "um, yeah, there was a refrigerator back there..." ...yeah dude, and a guillotine, and a futon, and a keg, and half a dozen computer monitors.... staying at the beach right now with the family minus Natalie (sick with the flu...whether it's of the porky variety i'm not sure) and my Dad. Chris is still funemployed so he made it down too. we had a pre-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving dinner tonight with wild turkey (the boid, not the drank) and wild pheasant shot by my eighty-year-old Poppy. delicious. just watched Let The Right One In. phenomenal. go watch it right now. okay, my sibs just said they saw a shooting star outside. walk on the beach anyone? It's so hard to work up the energy to go to the laundromat on a Saturday. Even when the weather is as gorgeous as it is. I am looking forward to having our washer and dryer in our next place. Yesterday a couple came by the apartment to check it out. Mitch said they really seemed to like it. Hopefully they want to take over our lease so we can have an extra $1,000 we hadn't planned on :) We've been watching Dexter lately and man, the bandwagon was right...that show rules. It doesn't top the IT Crowd but it's good in its own way. Disc 2 of season 3 is supposed to come in the mail today. Alisha called me the other day and we chatted about how horrible Lila is. We also talked about how SHE AND ROB ARE BUYING A HOUSE! Holy awesome. That's the coolest news ever. It'll be so great to be in Atlanta, want to hang out with them and just be able to say "Okay see in you 2 and a half hours." I'm so looking forward to being so close to friends and family again. It seems like lately everything has just fallen into place just how I hoped it would. Good job? Check. Swell dude? Check. Nice cozy circle of friends? Double check. I guess unless you're an extremely incompetent person, eventually life does just look at you and say "welp! Here's everything you could want!" And those are 3 things I've always wanted. Thanks Life! Laundry can wait till tomorrow. Saturdays are too good to waste on Sunday business. |

Mitch and I went to the zoo over the weekend. In a moment of sheer awesomeness, the polar bear emerged from his hidey hole and finally let me see him full on out in the open. Maybe it was his farewell moment for me. I said so long to the sand cats and told them to behave.
In 2 weeks I think I am going to tell my boss that she won't have me anymore by the middle of December. Now time is just going to drip by. I've been trying to keep my mind focused on the paychecks I can still bring in if I can just keep hanging in here. It's taking those sums of money to keep me from yelling "I DON'T NEED THIS JOB ANYMORE SEE YA!" because really I could. I have enough saved that I could quit now and make it till I start my job in Atlanta, but stockpiling money is one of my favorite things to do.
I'm also very excited about getting a car. I don't know what I'm going to get yet, but it's going to be grrrrreat. I can't wait to see SO LONG to public transportation (although it's saved me money I'm sure). I can't wait to listen to my own music in my own car for the first time in 2 years.
I am so excited about so many things that it's hard to keep it all under control. From the big things--being near my parents, to the little things--STILL being in the same city as an Ikea! From the work related things--actually LOVING my job, to the food related things--omg I missed you so much Cheese Dip my old friend. It's all going to be one great big ball of Catherine's Happy Spot. I just can't imagine real life getting better (Imaginary life is a different story. Ride a unicorn to work? Yes please!)
It's going to be so weird living in Atlanta and not living at home but I think it's also going to be a great big adventure. Mitch and I are going to have a fabulous place (of course) because our styles are so similar. I can't wait to go "hey Mitch let's go to Loco's for dinner" and BAM! We can! I won't have to wait months and months to look forward to something like that. It can be an everyday thing.
It's going to be great to have all of North Carolina and South Carolina so accessible. Wanna see Katie? No problem. Jiggs? Even easier. Anyone in 828? Piece of cake. I'll feel better having family much more close by too. It's been hard being so isolated from everyone except for my aunt Cathy.
Time is still slowly dripping by here though. All of my wants December 18 to be here (no more work) and most of me wants January 2 to be here. A little piece of me is going to cling to Chicago, but I hope this great big city knows that I just wasn't cut out for it.
And I'm certainly not looking forward to my nightly walks to the train station from work now that it's dark, but, I guess I only have one more month of it :) |
